COMPUTER SCIENCE PROGRAM

OVERVIEW

The Computer Science program is part of the Computer Science and Information Technology field. The objective of the program is to train highly qualified engineers with the ability to design, build, and implement software systems that meet both domestic and international needs. Graduates of the Computer Science program are also equipped with the essential knowledge to pursue graduate studies (Master’s and PhD) in the field of Computer Science and Information Technology.

The program will equip students with foundational knowledge in the field of Computer Science and Information Technology, core knowledge in Computer Science, as well as specialized knowledge and technologies in areas such as artificial intelligence, computer security and safety, processing large-scale data from the Internet and social networks, and designing and developing applications for mobile devices and the Web environment.

PROGRAM
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

The program has defined Program Educational Objectives (PEO) that we expect our graduates to be able to achieve in their career paths. We expect that our graduates, within 5 years after graduation, will achieve the following goals in their careers:

  1. Exhibit ethical and legal considerations and concern for society in their work.
  2. Be successful in developing computing-based solutions to meet market demand in the context of the program’s discipline.
  3. Be successful in life-long learning relevant to their careers in the globally dynamic market.
  4. Exhibit abilities to function well in a multi-disciplinary team.

STUDENT OUTCOMES

The objectives are reflected in the following general student outcomes:

  1. Analyze a complex computing problem and apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions.
  2. Design, implement, and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the program’s discipline.
  3. Communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts.
  4. Recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments in computing practice based on legal and ethical principles.
  5. Function effectively as a member or leader of a team engaged in activities appropriate to the program’s discipline.
  6. Apply computer science theory and software development fundamentals to produce computing-based solutions.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Since 2008, Ho Chi Minh city University of Technology (HCMUT) VNU-HCM has been developing two training programs in Computer Science and Computer Engineering according to the ABET standards. ABET is a widely recognized accreditation for engineering and technology programs applied at universities in the United States. Since 2014, the Computer Science program, along with the Computer Engineering program, has been officially accredited by ABET. To date, these are the first and only two programs in Vietnam to be accredited by ABET. Through the process of developing the curriculum according to ABET standards, the quality of the two programs—Computer Science and Computer Engineering—has been enhanced to meet international benchmarks. Engineers graduating from ABET-accredited programs are widely recognized by companies and organizations in the United States.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

In addition to studying specialized knowledge in classroom sessions, students of the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering are very active in participating in scientific research activities alongside the faculty members. Many students have published scientific papers in reputable international conferences and journals while still enrolled in the undergraduate program. Some of the projects they have contributed to are highly practical, such as the traffic information system for Ho Chi Minh City (http://traffic.hcmut.edu.vn), an Android application guiding road users to avoid traffic congestion points (the Road Maester app on Google Play), vehicle detection and counting applications using traffic cameras, environmental monitoring systems for industrial zones, unmanned vehicle applications, underwater robot control systems, big data storage systems, and more.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

The Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering regularly organizes professional and career-oriented activities to help students prepare the necessary knowledge and skills for their future careers, while also making the student environment more dynamic and engaging. Notable activities are held annually, such as the job fair, Information Technology Week, professional competitions like the BKIT Car Rally, and seminars on new technologies and career skills with participation from the business community in Ho Chi Minh City. In addition, students of the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering actively engage in social and professional activities within the university, such as participating in the Green Summer Campaign, the Volunteer Spring Campaign, and more.
