DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION SYSTEMS

The Department of Information Systems (IS) is one of the leading and long-established departments with significant influence in education, scientific research, and technology transfer in various fields including Computer Science, Management Information Systems, and Information Technology. It operates under the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology – VNU-HCM. The department is oriented toward in-depth development in areas such as modern information systems, management information systems, data science and engineering, and information security. It plays a vital role in the training of undergraduate, engineering, master’s, and doctoral students, while also contributing actively to scientific research and technology transfer to address major and challenging problems in society.

The Department of Information Systems originated from the former Department of Databases, which was established in 1993 alongside the founding of the Faculty of Information Technology (now the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering) at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. In 2006, the department was officially renamed the Department of Information Systems to better reflect its academic strengths and to meet the evolving demands of society. Currently, the department consists of 3 Associate Professors, 3 lecturers holding Ph.D. degrees, 1 Senior Lecturer, 5 lecturers holding Master’s degrees, and 3 lecturers who are currently pursuing doctoral studies abroad.

Teaching and Research Areas & Achievements

Consistent with its development orientation focusing on modern information systems, management information systems, information security, data engineering and data science, the Department has played a leading role in education and training in key specialized areas such as: data mining, big data analytics, data warehouse and business intelligence, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), mobile computing, and information security. The Department has successfully trained thousands of bachelor's and engineering graduates, hundreds of master's and doctoral students, as well as high-caliber professionals equipped with strong expertise, creative thinking, and innovation capabilities. These individuals are well-prepared to meet the increasing demands of society and to take on leading roles in guiding the development of Information Technology (IT) and Computer Science both nationally and globally. Many alumni of the Department currently hold key positions and serve as leading figures in major corporations, government agencies, research institutes, and prestigious universities within the country and the region. Notably, the Department was the first in Vietnam to offer a Master's program in Management Information Systems (MIS) since 2007, and it continues to expand to meet the growing demand for highly qualified middle and senior-level managers in IT strategy and management across various enterprises. The Department has also made significant contributions to scientific research and technology transfer in information systems, computer science, cybersecurity, data science, and big data mining. It has produced hundreds of high-impact publications in prestigious international journals and conferences, and has delivered impactful technological products that benefit society. Moreover, the Department plays a vital role as a key contributor in developing and proposing research frameworks for smart city ecosystems in major cities such as Ho Chi Minh City. It actively engages in strategic research aligned with the trends of digital transformation and the ongoing Fourth Industrial Revolution.
