DEPARTURE OF COMPUTER ENGINEERING

The Department of Computer Engineering (CE) is one of the five departments under the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering (formerly the Faculty of Information Technology) at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology – VNU-HCM. The department was established in 1993, alongside the founding of the Faculty. Over the years of growth and development, the CE Department has built a strong team of experienced lecturers who received formal training from advanced countries, along with a group of outstanding teaching assistants trained at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology – VNU-HCM.

The Department of Computer Engineering is primarily responsible for the undergraduate Computer Engineering program — one of the two ABET-accredited programs at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology – VNU-HCM, alongside the Computer Science program offered by the same faculty.

Teaching and Research Areas & Achievements

The Department of Computer Engineering is currently the primary unit responsible for training computer engineers and bachelor’s degree students specializing in Computer Engineering, with the following areas of specialization:

– Modern Computing Systems: including computing systems developed on embedded platforms or high-performance computing platforms using FPGA, VLSI circuits, or multi-core computers/systems, parallel and distributed computing

– Internet of Things (IoT) and Network Security: including systems built on IoT platforms such as environmental monitoring systems and automation systems, as well as high-speed network security and intrusion prevention systems utilizing hardware acceleration through CPUs or FPGAs.

Faculty members of the Department have led numerous research projects and technology transfer initiatives, many of which have been funded by international organizations such as JICA (Japan), AUN/SEED-Net (ASEAN University Network), SATU (Taiwan), and the US Army, as well as various domestic agencies including VNU-HCM, provincial and municipal Departments of Science and Technology, and major companies and corporations such as VNG, Renesas, and Tiki. The Department is currently collaborating with prestigious international universities such as the University of Electro-Communications (UEC) – Japan, University of Porto – Portugal, Delft University of Technology – the Netherlands, and National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) – Taiwan.

Faculty members of the Department have also published extensively in reputable international journals (indexed by SCI/SCIE/Scopus) and presented their work at prestigious international conferences.

The main research directions of the Department include:

– Enhancing processing performance using FPGA for applications ranging from machine learning to biological sequence matching and various other domains.

– High-performance network intrusion prevention systems.

– Processor architectures on FPGA, such as RISC-V and VLIW.

– Environmental monitoring systems for air and water quality, supporting public health, agriculture, and aquaculture.

– Automated control systems based on IoT and embedded technologies.

– Applications based on blockchain and IoT technologies.

Implementation of a water quality monitoring project for shrimp farming ponds, in collaboration between Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT) and the University of Electro-Communications (UEC), Japan
Academic collaboration with National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Taiwan, and University of Science and Technology – University of Danang, Vietnam.
