[Sửa] Course Description

Undertaking research in any discipline, let alone CS/IT, is a complex and time consuming process where success is not always guaranteed. Research requires the deep understanding of the chosen topic, mastery of the current and previous work, and some assurance that the work undertaken will lead to original results which will be then be recognized by experts in the field. One of the difficulties is to differentiate between work which is routine, based on known methods and procedures, and work which can be considered original research. Once one is satisfied that the research work has produced satisfactory results, the next question is to present the these in an oral and/or written form to one's peers and seniors. It is well recognized that students of technology and sciences, in particular CS/IT students, do not like writing even though they could be brilliant, say, in handling perfectly well symbols for programming. It is important to realize that, regardless students' intentions for the future, to pursue a higher degree study or enter the profession, they will certainly be required to undertake to some extend technical writing and oral presentation for the purposes of documenting their work and communicating to others. Thus technical writing and presentation are indivisible parts of most jobs which need to be properly mastered to pursue successful careers. There are no magic formulas for undertaking successful research and for good technical writing and presentation. However, through experience, there are certain guidelines and principles which can be developed to help the novice researcher and emphasize the issues that need to be addressed. This Workshop is intended to present various stages that exist in undertaking research in CS/IT and highlight good practice. The second part of the Workshop will concentrate on documenting and reporting the research and presenting it. The emphasis will be placed on writing technical papers or thesis for publication in mind. The Workshop will require the participants to undertake assignments as practical work.
